As NewlyWeds, you might be considering adding a furry friend to your family. There are a lot of challenges and joys that come along with adding a dog to the mix. Consider these pros and cons and decide if adding a dog is the right choice for your marriage.

THE CONS OF HAVING A DOG

Allergies aside there are three HUGE reasons some couples may decide the dog life is not for them.

1. It can add unwanted responsibility to your marriage.

They may be cute, but dogs do add a lot of responsibility to your relationship. As a couple, you have to decide who is going to clean up the dog hair, feed the dog, walk the dog, and wash the dog. These decisions should be made as a couple and should feel like a joint effort. Are you both willing to take on this responsibility?

2. Taking care of a dog costs money.

Even if you get your dog from your local humane shelter (WHICH WE HIGHLY RECOMMEND), there are costs associated with a dog. These costs include food, dog sitters, vet bills and lots of dog toys that will be chewed through and torn apart in a day. Is this additional cost the best thing for your marriage right now?

3. Having a dog may limit your freedom.

Your schedule will no longer be your own. You will have to rush home from work to let the dog out. All plans for vacations and trips will have to be made with your dog in mind. Are you and your spouse ready to lose this freedom?

It's okay to decide that a furry friend is not the right thing for your marriage right now. Maybe start with a goldfish or a plant. Having something that you are both responsible for can create a special bond between the two of you.

THE PROS OF HAVING A DOG:

Adding a dog to your marriage is a great way for you to grow closer together as a couple (and add a little joy to your life). Here are three reasons why adding a dog to your family can be huge a plus.

1. Joint responsibility

Hey! You're a team now! Joint responsibility and care for this furry friend can create a special bond between the two of you.

2. You are growing your family.

Many couples get a dog to help them get in the rhythm of what it would be like to have a child. Now we all know the responsibility of a child is much bigger than that of a dog, but it's a great place to start.

3. It can add even more joy to your marriage.

You can expect lots of laughs to be added to your marriage with the addition of a dog. Dogs are always doing silly things that will make you smile and warm your heart. Besides your spouse, they can be a great thing to come home to after a rough day at work.
